Curtain Rod Parts Explained: Brackets, Finials, Rings and Stoppers

Buying curtain rods means choosing more than a pole. Here is what each part does, from brackets and finials to rings and stoppers, and how many you need for each window.

Key points

  • A curtain rod set is a rod, brackets, finials (end caps), rings or hooks, and sometimes stoppers and connectors.
  • Single brackets hold one rod; double brackets hold a sheer curtain and a main curtain together.
  • Add a centre bracket on long runs and for heavy curtains so the rod does not sag.
  • Antoh Decor supplies powder-coated rods and accessories, and can install them.

A curtain rod is only as good as the parts that hold it. If you are buying curtain rods in Kenya, here is what each part does and how many you need, so you leave the shop with a complete set.

The parts of a curtain rod set

PartWhat it does
Rod (pole)Carries the curtain across the window
BracketsFix the rod to the wall or ceiling
FinialsDecorative end caps that also stop rings sliding off
Rings or hooksHang the curtain from the rod and let it slide
StoppersHold the end ring in place so the curtain stays at the edge
ConnectorsJoin two rods for very long windows

Single or double brackets?

  • Single brackets hold one rod: one curtain per window.
  • Double brackets hold two rods: a light sheer at the back and a heavier main curtain at the front. This is the most popular setup in Kenyan living rooms and hotels.

How many brackets?

Use one bracket at each end. On long runs (as a rule of thumb, beyond about 1.5 m) and with heavy curtains, add a centre bracket so the rod does not sag. Very long runs may need more than one centre support.

Choosing finials

Finials are where style comes in: balls, spears, scrolls or simple caps. Pick a finish that matches door handles and light fittings. Our rods and accessories are powder coated, so the colour lasts and does not peel like paint.

Bay windows and corners

Bay windows and corners need a rod bent to the shape of the window. We bend rods to fit with our rolling and bending service.

How long should the rod be?

Measure the width of the window frame and add extra on each side so the curtains can open fully without covering the glass. Many interior designers extend the rod roughly 15 – 25 cm beyond the frame on each side, and mount it 10 – 15 cm above the frame (or higher, closer to the ceiling, to make a room feel taller). For double rods, measure for the front rod; the back rod is slightly shorter.

Count the hooks or rings on your curtains, or measure the curtain width, and we will help with the number.

Common mistakes

  • A rod exactly the width of the window, so open curtains block half the light.
  • No centre bracket on a long rod, which then sags.
  • Wall plugs that do not suit the wall (hollow blocks and gypsum need special fixings).
  • Finials that hit an adjacent wall or cupboard. Measure the space at both ends.

Need it installed?

We measure for free, supply and install. Read how our curtain rod installation works, or our guide to choosing curtain rods for homes, offices and hotels. To buy, see the curtain rods, brackets and finials page.

Frequently asked questions

What is a curtain finial?

The decorative end cap on a curtain rod. It finishes the look and stops rings sliding off the end.

Do I need single or double curtain brackets?

How many brackets does a curtain rod need?

One at each end, plus a centre bracket on long runs and with heavy curtains so the rod does not sag.

Can you bend curtain rods for a bay window?

Yes, we bend rods to fit bay windows and corners.
