Roller shutters By Antoh Decor Enterprises 3 min read
Key points
- A secure roller shutter combines heavy-gauge steel laths, deep guide channels fixed firmly into the structure, a strong bottom bar and good locks.
- Installation matters as much as the shutter: poorly fixed guides are the most common weak point.
- Rust-resistant finishes keep the shutter strong and smooth for years.
- Antoh Decor measures, makes to size and installs roller shutters across Kenya.
A roller shutter is often the only thing between a shop’s stock and the street at night. Most shutters look alike when they are down, but how well they resist a break-in depends on a few details. Here is what to check before you buy.
1. The steel laths
The curtain of a roller shutter is made from interlocking steel strips called laths. Heavier-gauge steel resists bending, prying and cutting far better than thin sheet. Ask what thickness you are being quoted, and compare like with like.
2. Guide channels
The guides are the vertical tracks on each side. Burglars often try to pull the curtain out of the guides. Secure shutters use:
- Deep guides that hold more of the curtain edge.
- Firm fixing into concrete or steel, with anchors at close spacing, not a few screws into plaster.
- Guides that run the full height, from floor to the shutter box.
3. Bottom bar and locks
The bottom bar is where the shutter meets the floor, and where a crowbar goes first. A strong bottom bar with good locks (central or side locks, depending on width) stops the shutter being lifted. Wide shopfronts benefit from locks at both sides.
4. The shutter box and drum
When the shutter is up, it rolls around a drum at the top. A closed box or hood protects the drum from tampering and from dust and rain.
5. Finish
Rust weakens steel and makes shutters stiff. Rust-resistant finishes keep the shutter strong and smooth to operate. For colour matching, laths can also be powder coated.
6. Professional installation
The best shutter fails if the guides are badly fixed or the drum is out of line. Our trained technicians measure, mount and test every shutter. We handle everything from measurement to final testing.
Questions to ask before you buy
- What steel thickness are the laths, and what finish do they have?
- How deep are the guide channels, and how will they be fixed to my walls?
- What locks are included, and where do they engage?
- Is the drum enclosed in a box?
- Who installs it, and is the shutter tested in front of me?
A supplier who answers these clearly is one you can trust with your security.
Keeping a shutter secure over the years
- Lubricate the guides lightly and keep them free of grit so the shutter does not jam half-closed.
- Check the guide fixings and locks every few months; a loose guide is a weak point.
- Repair dents in the laths early before they stop the shutter rolling.
- Never force a stuck shutter; find out what is blocking it.
Manual or automatic?
Security is the same either way; automation adds convenience. See types of roller shutter doors for manual, decorated and motorised options.
