Key points
- Sliding window rollers are the small wheels under a sliding sash that run along the track.
- They come in 1″ and ¾″, and in Type A and Type B fittings; match the old roller.
- Replace rollers when the window drags, jumps the track, squeaks or will not lock.
- Bring an old roller to Antoh Decor and we match it; wholesale and retail.
Every sliding window runs on small rollers (wheels) fitted under the sash. When they wear, the window becomes heavy to push, jumps off the track or will not close properly. Replacing the rollers is usually all it takes to make the window slide like new.
Type A vs Type B
We stock rollers in two fitting types, Type A and Type B, which differ in the shape of the housing that fits into the sash. The type must match your window profile. The easiest way to get it right is to remove one old roller and bring it, or a clear photo of it, to our shop.
1″ or ¾″?
| Size | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 1″ | Larger, heavier sashes and sliding doors |
| ¾″ | Standard and smaller sliding windows |
Match the size of the old roller so the sash sits at the right height in the frame.
Signs your rollers need replacing
- The window is hard to push or scrapes along the track.
- It jumps off the track or rocks in the frame.
- It squeaks or grinds.
- The lock no longer lines up because the sash has dropped.
How to replace sliding window rollers
- Lift the sash up into the top track and swing the bottom out to remove it.
- Remove the old rollers (screws, clips or a crimped housing, depending on the window).
- Clean the bottom track thoroughly. Grit is what wears rollers out.
- Fit the new rollers, refit the sash and test. Adjust the height screw if the roller has one.
Make new rollers last longer
- Keep the track clean. Sweep or vacuum grit out of the bottom track every few weeks, especially on dusty roads and during building work.
- Do not oil the track. Oil holds dust and turns it into grinding paste. A dry, clean track is best.
- Check drainage holes in the track so rain does not stand in it.
- Do not force a stuck window. Find out why it is stuck before the roller breaks.
Replace all rollers at once
A sash usually has two rollers, and they wear together. Replacing both keeps the sash level and the lock aligned. On a building with many windows, replace rollers window by window as they fail, and keep a few spares of the right type.
