Decorative pipes & handrails By Antoh Decor Enterprises 3 min read
Key points
- Sugarcane pipes have rings at regular intervals, like a sugarcane stalk, and suit classic balcony and corridor railings.
- Use 1″ or 1¼″ for most balusters; 1½″ for posts and feature rails.
- Keep baluster gaps small for child safety and finish with a matching handrail and ball tops.
- Antoh Decor stocks sugarcane pipes, handrails and caps in Nairobi.
Sugarcane pipes are decorative steel pipes with raised rings at regular intervals, just like a stalk of sugarcane. As balusters they give balconies and corridors a calm, classic look, especially when painted white or cream.
Choosing the size
| Size | Use |
|---|---|
| ¾″ | Light balusters, window grills |
| 1″ | Standard balcony and corridor balusters |
| 1¼″ | Heavier balusters, staircases |
| 1½″ | Posts and corners |
Building a sugarcane railing
- Measure the run of the balcony or corridor, including corners and returns.
- Set the posts at the ends and corners, ideally in a bigger size.
- Space the balusters evenly; many fundis keep the gap at about 10 cm or less so children cannot slip through.
- Line up the rings so they sit at the same height on every pipe. It makes a big difference to the finished look.
- Fit the handrail: a Type A or Type B handrail on top, and round ball caps on the posts.
Finishing
White sugarcane railings look classic on colonial-style houses and apartments; black or charcoal suits modern buildings. Outdoors, powder coating holds up better than paint, especially on balconies that get rain.
Estimating materials for a balcony
| Item | How to work it out |
|---|---|
| Sugarcane balusters | Run length ÷ spacing, × baluster height |
| Posts | One at each end and corner, plus one every 2 – 2.5 m on long runs |
| Bottom rail | Same as the run length |
| Handrail | Run length plus extra for corners; 20 ft lengths reduce joints |
| Ball caps | One per post |

Apartments and repeat jobs
Sugarcane railings are a favourite on apartment blocks because the pattern is calm and easy to repeat on every floor. For contractors, we can supply the same pipe size and handrail profile for every unit, so all balconies match.
Maintenance
Wash balcony railings occasionally to remove dust and bird droppings, and touch up any chips straight away, especially on the handrail and at the bottom rail where water sits. A powder-coated railing needs far less attention than a painted one.
Common mistakes
- Rings at different heights on neighbouring pipes.
- Posts too far apart, so the railing flexes when leaned on.
- No drainage at the bottom rail, so water collects and rusts it.
