Decorative pipes & handrails By Antoh Decor Enterprises 3 min read
Key points
- Twisted pipes have a spiral form and give an elegant wrought-iron look, especially painted black.
- Millipede pipes have a ribbed, segmented surface; sugarcane pipes have evenly spaced rings.
- All three come in ¾″, 1″, 1¼″ and 1½″.
- Twisted suits staircases and atriums, millipede suits grills and walls, sugarcane suits classic balconies.
Decorative pipes are the quickest way to make a railing, grill or gate look special. At Antoh Decor the three most popular are twisted, millipede and sugarcane. All three come in ¾″, 1″, 1¼″ and 1½″, so the choice comes down to the look you want.

When to choose twisted pipes
Twisted pipes have a spiral that adds movement to a railing. On a staircase the twist follows the eye up the stairs, and painted black it gives a wrought-iron look without the cost of hand-forged work. They are our favourite choice for indoor atrium balconies and grand staircases.
When to choose millipede pipes
Choose millipede pipes when you want texture that can be seen from a distance: perimeter wall grills, gates and window grills. They look best painted in two colours.
When to choose sugarcane pipes
Choose sugarcane pipes for a calm, classic balcony or corridor railing, especially on apartments where many units must look the same.
Can you mix them?
Yes, carefully. A common approach is one pattern for the balusters and plain bars or posts in between. Avoid using all three in one railing. Finish every railing with a matching handrail.
Working with twisted pipes
- Cut at the same point in the twist on every pipe, so the spirals line up across the railing.
- Keep the twist direction the same on all balusters, unless you are deliberately mirroring them on either side of a centre post.
- Cap or close the ends so water cannot get inside.
- Finish carefully: the spiral has deep grooves. Spray or powder coating covers them more evenly than a brush.

Frequently asked questions
Which decorative pipe is best for a staircase?
Twisted pipes are the most popular for staircases because the spiral follows the eye up the stairs. Sugarcane also works well for a classic look.
Are twisted pipes strong enough for balusters?
Yes. Choose 1″ or 1¼″ for staircase balusters and fix them securely top and bottom.
Do all decorative pipes come in the same sizes?
At Antoh Decor, twisted, millipede and sugarcane pipes all come in ¾″, 1″, 1¼″ and 1½″.
Can I see the pipes before buying?
Yes. Visit our Gikomba or Kariobangi branch in Nairobi, or ask for photos on WhatsApp.
