Stainless steel By Antoh Decor Enterprises 3 min read
Key points
- Stainless steel railings do not need painting and resist rust; they suit modern homes, offices and coastal areas.
- Painted mild steel railings allow decorative pipes, castings, CNC panels and any colour.
- Mild steel needs a good finish (ideally powder coating) and occasional repainting.
- Antoh Decor supplies parts for both: SS posts, balusters, handrails and balls, and mild steel decorative parts.
Choosing a railing material is a choice between two good options. Stainless steel gives a polished, modern, low-maintenance railing. Mild steel, painted or powder coated, gives you almost unlimited decorative choices. Here is how they compare.
Side-by-side comparison
| Stainless steel | Mild steel (painted / powder coated) | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Polished or brushed metal, modern | Any colour; classic or modern |
| Rust | Resists rust; no paint needed | Rusts if the finish is damaged |
| Maintenance | Occasional cleaning | Touch-ups and repainting over the years |
| Design options | Clean lines, glass panels, cables, balls | Decorative pipes, castings, chillums, CNC panels |
| Fabrication | Needs stainless welding skills (usually TIG) | Any fundi with a standard welder |
Choose stainless steel if…
- You want a modern, minimal look, often with glass panels.
- The railing is near the coast or around a swimming pool, where rust is a problem. Ask about the steel grade: higher grades resist salt better.
- You want almost no maintenance.
- It is a busy commercial building where paint would wear off the handrail.
Choose mild steel if…
- You want decorative detail: decorative pipes, chillums or CNC panels.
- You want a specific colour to match the house.
- Your fundi will fabricate on site with standard equipment.
The best of both
Many Kenyan homes mix the two: a painted mild steel railing with stainless steel balls on the newel posts, or a stainless handrail on top of a decorated mild steel balustrade. Protect the mild steel parts with powder coating.
Cost: what drives the price
We do not publish prices because they depend on the job, but these are the factors that decide what you pay for either material:
- Material: stainless steel costs more per metre than mild steel, and higher stainless grades cost more again.
- Design: glass panels, curves and spiral stairs add work; decorative parts add to a mild steel railing.
- Finish: mild steel needs paint or powder coating; stainless needs polishing at joints.
- Lifetime cost: mild steel needs repainting over the years; stainless mostly needs cleaning.
Send us your staircase measurements and the look you want, and we will price both options so you can compare.
Spiral staircases
Spiral stairs need a handrail and balusters that follow a continuous curve. Stainless steel handrails bent to the curve give a smooth, modern result; our photos show a stainless spiral staircase railing with SS posts and balusters.
We supply SS posts, balusters, handrails and balls for straight and spiral staircases. See the stainless steel staircase and balcony railings page or call us to discuss your staircase.

Frequently asked questions
Is stainless steel better than mild steel for railings?
Neither is better for every job. Stainless steel resists rust and needs little maintenance; mild steel is easier to decorate and colour.
Do stainless steel railings rust?
They resist rust well. Near the sea, choose a higher grade and clean off salt regularly.
Can I mix stainless steel and mild steel in one railing?
Yes. Stainless balls or handrails on a powder-coated mild steel railing are a popular combination.
Do you install stainless steel railings?
