Key points

  • A decorated railing has four layers: newel posts, balusters, a decorative band and a handrail.
  • Chillums (tumbo or plain) dress the balusters; stainless steel balls finish the newel posts; a CNC strip adds a modern band.
  • Plan the parts per metre of railing, then multiply by the run length.
  • Antoh Decor supplies every part, and the full chillum guide explains chillum tumbo vs chillum plain.

A staircase is often the first thing visitors see inside a home, and the railing is what makes it look finished. This guide shows how to plan a decorated staircase or balcony railing from parts you can buy in one place: chillums, stainless steel balls, CNC strips and handrails.

The four layers of a railing

  1. Newel posts at the start, end and turns of the stair.
  2. Balusters, the vertical bars between the posts.
  3. A decorative band, such as a CNC strip just below the handrail.
  4. The handrail on top.

Step 1: Dress the balusters with chillums

Chillums slide onto balusters to give them a rich, shaped profile. Chillum tumbo has a bulging middle; chillum plain is slimmer and smoother. We explain the difference in detail in Upgrade your metalwork projects with chillum tumbo and chillum plain. Add a damru above and below each chillum for a classic turned look.

Step 2: Finish the newel posts with SS balls

A polished stainless steel ball on each newel post gives a modern contrast to a painted railing. Use 3″ balls on most staircases and 4″ on large, open stairs.

Step 3: Add a CNC strip

A 1 m CNC strip welded just under the handrail adds a modern band of pattern without changing the balusters. For a fully modern look, replace the balusters entirely with CNC railing panels.

Step 4: Choose the handrail

Pick a Type A or Type B handrail, plain or decorated, in 20 ft lengths to reduce joints.

Parts list per metre (example)

PartQuantity per metre
BalustersAbout 8 to 10, depending on spacing
Chillums1 per baluster
Damru0 to 2 per baluster

Handrail1 m (+ bends at turns)
SS balls1 per newel post

Colour schemes that work

  • Black railing, gold chillums, SS balls: the most popular combination in Nairobi homes; rich but modern.
  • Charcoal grey with a silver CNC strip: clean and contemporary, ideal with grey floor tiles.
  • White railing, SS balls: light and fresh on bright staircases.
  • Bronze or antique finish: suits timber treads and classic interiors.

Pick the colour of the chillums and the strip before painting, so the painter or powder coater can mask and finish them in one go.

Indoor and outdoor railings

Indoor staircases can use lighter sections and finer detail. Outdoor balconies face sun and rain, so use stronger sections, make sure water can drain from hollow parts, and choose powder coating rather than ordinary paint. Stainless steel balls do well outdoors.

Common design mistakes

  • Too many decoration types: chillums, damru, flowers, castings and a CNC strip all on one railing look busy. Pick two or three.
  • Chillums at different heights: on stairs, set them parallel to the slope, not level with the floor.
  • A weak newel post: the post carries most of the load at the bottom of the stair. Make it strong and well fixed before decorating it.
  • Sharp handrail joints: grind every weld smooth; hands slide along the rail every day.

Keep the gap between balusters small enough that a child cannot squeeze through; many fundis keep it at about 10 cm or less. Measure the full run of your staircase and balcony, multiply, and send us the list for a price.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between chillum tumbo and chillum plain?

Chillum tumbo has a bulging, rounded middle; chillum plain is slimmer with a smooth profile. Both slide onto balusters and weld easily.

What size stainless steel ball suits a staircase newel post?

A 3 inch ball suits most staircases; use 4 inch on large or open stairs and 2.5 inch on small posts.

How many balusters do I need per metre?

Usually 8 to 10, depending on bar size and the gap you leave. Keep gaps small for child safety.

Can I mix CNC strips with chillums?

Yes. A CNC strip under the handrail with chillum-dressed balusters below is a popular mixed design.
