Key points
- Washer damru are decorative collars that slide over a bar; choose square-tube or round-tube fit to match your bar shape.
- Match the size to the bar: 16 mm, 20 mm or 25 mm.
- They are used on staircase and balcony balusters, gate bars and window grills.
- Antoh Decor stocks all three sizes in both fits for wholesale and retail.
Washer damru are flat, decorative collars that slide onto a bar and are welded in place. They give plain balusters and gate bars a turned, finished look for very little cost or labour. The only thing to get right is the fit: the hole must match the shape and size of your bar.
Square tube or round tube?
We stock washer damru for square tube application and for round tube application. A square hole on a square bar sits flush and cannot rotate before welding, which makes alignment easy. On round bars, use the round-hole version.
Choosing 16 mm, 20 mm or 25 mm
| Size | Typical bar | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| 16 mm | 16 mm square or round bar | Window grills, light railings |
| 20 mm | 20 mm bar | Balcony and staircase balusters |
| 25 mm | 25 mm bar / tube | Gate bars, heavier railings |
Measure the bar with a tape or vernier before ordering. If you are not sure, bring an offcut of the bar to our shop and we will match it.
Spacing and layout
- Fix damru at the same height on every baluster so they form a straight line along the railing. Use a string line or a jig.
- Pairs of damru with a chillum between them make a classic turned baluster.
- On gates, place damru where bars pass through rails to hide the joint.
Washer damru vs decorative damru
Washer damru are flatter and lighter. Decorative damru are rounder, cast collars with more relief. Many fundis use both on the same job.
How many do I need? An example
A balcony railing 6 m long with balusters at about 12 cm centres has roughly 50 balusters. With one washer damru near the top and one near the bottom of each, that is about 100 pieces, plus a few spares for mistakes. Work out your own numbers like this:
- Railing length ÷ baluster spacing = number of balusters.
- Number of balusters × damru per baluster = total.
- Add about 5% for spares.
Common mistakes
- Wrong bore: a 20 mm damru on a 16 mm bar wobbles and needs a lot of weld to fill the gap. Match the size.
- Uneven heights: even a few millimetres show along a long railing. Use a jig or a marked stick.
- Welding all round: two or three neat tacks are enough and keep the damru looking crisp.
- Fitting after the frame is welded: damru must go onto the bar before both ends are fixed.
Finishing
The edges of a damru catch paint well and look good picked out in a second colour, such as gold on black. Clean off weld spatter, prime, and paint or powder coat the whole railing together.

A flat decorative collar with a square or round hole that slides over a bar and is welded in place, used on balusters, gate bars and grills.
Which damru size do I need?
Match it to your bar size: 16 mm, 20 mm or 25 mm. Bring an offcut to our shop if you are unsure.
Can I use a round damru on a square bar?
It is better not to. Use the square-tube version on square bars so it sits flush and looks neat.
