Gate & balcony decor By Antoh Decor Enterprises 4 min read
Key points
- A decorated gate usually combines a top finish (spear heads or balls), panel infill (castings, CNC or checkered plate) and small details (chillums, flowers).
- Round balls come in 2.5″, 3″, 3.5″ and 4″; bigger balls suit pillars, smaller ones suit gate rails.
- Modern gates lean on CNC panels and checkered or grooved sheets; classic gates lean on castings and spear heads.
- Antoh Decor supplies all the parts in one place in Nairobi, with countrywide delivery.
A modern gate in Kenya is more than a steel frame and sheet. The decorations are what make one gate stand out on the street. The good news is that most designs are built from a small set of parts. Once you know what each part does, you can plan a gate that looks good and is easy for your fundi to make.
The parts of a decorated gate
| Part | Where it goes | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Spear heads / arrows | Top of vertical bars | Classic look and an extra deterrent against climbing |
| Round balls (2.5″–4″) | Pillars, posts, top rail | Clean, finished ends |
| Cast ornaments | Panels and arches | Traditional, detailed look |
| Chillums and damru | On bars and balusters | Turned, decorative detail |
| CNC strips and panels | Panels, borders, pedestrian door | Modern patterns |
| Decorative checkered plates | Lower panels, full cladding | Privacy and texture |
Five popular gate styles
1. Classic spear-top gate
Vertical bars topped with spear heads, a scroll arch and a cast centre piece. Use our L-Series castings for the arch and centre.
2. Checkered-plate privacy gate
A solid lower half in decorative checkered plate with bars or a CNC strip above. Private, strong and low maintenance.
3. Modern CNC gate
Full CNC laser-cut panels in a geometric or star pattern, often finished two-tone in grey and gold.
4. Grooved-sheet minimalist gate
Clean horizontal lines from grooved gate sheets, with little or no ornament. Popular on new builds and apartments.
5. Mixed classic-modern gate
Checkered plate below, bars with chillums and flowers in the middle, and spear heads on top. A good balance of privacy, light and decoration.
Planning tips
- Decide the style first, then count parts per panel and multiply by the number of panels.
- Order a few extra small pieces; it is cheaper than a second trip.
- For sliding gates, keep heavy decoration low so the gate stays balanced on its rollers and fit roller guides at the top.
- Plan the finish: powder coating lasts longer than paint on decorated gates.
Matching the gate to the house
A gate is the first thing people see, so it should match the building behind it:
- Maisonettes and bungalows with tiled roofs usually suit classic or mixed designs: castings, spear heads and a checkered lower half.
- Flat-roofed modern houses and townhouses suit grooved sheets or CNC panels with little ornament.
- Apartment blocks need a gate that is strong, easy to maintain and often automated: keep decoration simple and the gate light enough for the motor.
- Commercial premises often add the company name or logo in a custom CNC panel.
Security features worth including
Decoration and security can work together:
- Spear heads along the top discourage climbing.
- Avoid horizontal bars low down that act as a ladder; checkered plate or a CNC panel below removes footholds.
- Keep gaps between bars small enough that a hand cannot reach the lock from outside, or fit a lock box.
- Use strong hinges on swing gates, and roller guides on sliding gates so they cannot be lifted off the track.
Ordering checklist
- Gate type (swing or sliding), width and height of each leaf, and the pedestrian door.
- Style and a reference photo.
- Decoration parts and quantities per panel.
- Sheet or plate for infill, with thickness.
- Hinges, roller guides, locks and, if needed, a gate motor.
- Finish: paint or powder coating, and colours.
