Gate & balcony decor By Antoh Decor Enterprises 4 min read
Key points
- Use 1.5″–2.5″ flowers on window grills and balusters, 3″–5″ on gates, and 6″–10″ as centre pieces.
- Pick one design and repeat it in two or three sizes for a balanced look.
- The R-Series covers designs R1 to R28, plus RL leaves, D-cups and aluminium sunflower and mushroom flowers.
- Antoh Decor sells steel flowers wholesale and retail in Nairobi and delivers across Kenya.
Steel decorative flowers (also called rosettes) are the quickest way to add detail to a plain gate, grill or balcony. The trick is choosing the right size for the space: a flower that is too big crowds a window grill, and one that is too small disappears on a wide gate. This guide explains how fundis in Kenya choose sizes from our R-Series.
Size guide: where each flower size works
| Flower size | Best for | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5″ – 2.5″ | Window grills, balusters, small pedestrian gates | Fits between bars without blocking light or view |
| 3″ – 5″ | Swing and sliding gates, balcony panels | The most popular range for gate panels |
| 6″ – 10″ | Gate centres, pillars, feature walls | Use one or two as a focal point, not many |
What is in the R-Series
- R1 – R28: pressed steel flowers and rosettes, most designs available in several sizes.
- RL leaves: steel leaves that pair with the flowers to make stems and sprays.
- D-cups: small domed cups used as flower centres or as caps.
- Sunflower and mushroom flowers: also available in aluminium, which is lighter and does not rust.
How to design with flowers
Choose one flower design and repeat it in two or three sizes. For example, a large 8″ flower in the centre of a gate, 4″ flowers in each panel, and 2″ flowers on the pedestrian door. Add RL leaves to join flowers to the frame so they look like they are growing, not just stuck on.
Flowers combine well with L-Series scrolls and leaves and with damru collars on the bars.
Finishing
Pressed steel flowers have thin edges, so they rust first if left bare. Clean off grease after welding, prime straight away, and paint, or choose powder coating for outdoor gates. Gold or copper highlights on a black gate are a popular finish in Nairobi estates.
Worked example: a flower design for a double gate
For a 12 ft double gate with three panels per leaf and a pedestrian door:
- 1 large flower (8″ or 10″) where the two leaves meet at the top, split or placed on the fixed leaf.
- 6 medium flowers (4″), one in the centre of each panel.
- 12 – 24 small flowers (2″) along the top rail or at bar crossings.
- 2 – 4 small flowers on the pedestrian door, matching the main gate.
- RL leaves in pairs beside the medium flowers to make simple stems.
Using one design in three sizes keeps the gate calm and balanced, even with many flowers on it.
Welding pressed flowers without burning through
Pressed flowers are thinner than the bars they sit on. To weld them cleanly:
- Use a smaller rod, such as 2.5 mm E6013, and turn the current down.
- Tack the flower from the back or at the stem, where the weld will not show.
- Point the heat at the thicker bar, not the thin petal.
- Clean off spatter before priming so the finish is smooth.
Common mistakes
- Flowers too big for a grill: they block light and look heavy. Stay at 2.5″ or below on windows.
- Different designs on each panel: it looks cluttered. Repeat one design.
- Forgetting the pedestrian door: it should match the main gate.
- Welding aluminium flowers to steel: it will not hold with ordinary rods. Use the steel versions on welded work.

Frequently asked questions
What size of steel flower is best for a gate?
3 to 5 inch flowers are the most common choice for gate panels. Use a 6 to 10 inch flower as a single centre piece.
Are steel flowers for gates made of iron?
Ours are pressed steel. The sunflower and mushroom designs are also available in aluminium.
Do aluminium sunflowers rust?
No, aluminium does not rust like steel, but it cannot be welded with ordinary mild steel rods. Fix it with bolts, rivets or adhesive, or use the steel version.
Can I buy steel flowers in bulk for my hardware shop?
Yes. We supply hardware shops at wholesale prices and deliver countrywide.
