Key points
- A 2 × 8 ft panel is about 0.6 m tall and 2.4 m long, which suits balcony railings and long gate inserts.
- Designs: 301 herringbone, 302 fan scales, 303 Greek key, 304 wave and 305 medallion.
- Available in 16 and 14 gauge; cut to length for each bay.
- Frame each panel and fit a handrail on top for a finished railing.
The 2 × 8 ft CNC panel (about 0.6 m by 2.4 m) is the most practical size for balcony railings. It is tall enough to fill the space under a handrail and long enough to span most balcony bays without a joint.
Why 2 × 8 ft suits balconies
- It fits under a handrail on a standard balcony height when combined with a bottom rail and frame.
- One panel per bay means no joints in the pattern.
- It is light enough for two fundis to lift into place on site.
The 300-series designs
| Design | Pattern | Works well on |
|---|---|---|
| 301 | Herringbone | Modern apartments |
| 302 | Fan scales | Feature balconies |
| 303 | Greek key | Classic homes, borders |
| 304 | Wave | Coastal and contemporary designs |
| 305 | Medallion | Gates and decorative fences |
Planning a balcony run
- Measure each bay between posts.
- Decide whether to cut panels to each bay length, or to keep full panels and adjust post positions.
- For long bays over 8 ft, add a post and use two panels with the pattern mirrored.
- Choose 14 gauge for exposed, windy balconies; 16 gauge for sheltered ones.
Gate inserts
On sliding and swing gates, a 2 × 8 ft panel makes a long horizontal band, often between a solid lower half and a spear-top or plain upper rail. Combine with checkered plate or grooved sheet for a modern gate.
Fixing panels into the railing frame
- Build the frame for each bay: posts, a bottom rail and a top rail, square and plumb.
- Set the panel inside the frame, centred, with an even gap all round.
- Tack at the corners, check the pattern is level, then stitch-weld along the edges in short runs, moving around the panel to spread the heat.
- Fit the handrail on top and grind all welds smooth.
Choosing a design for apartments
On an apartment block, every balcony is seen together from the street. Pick a pattern that looks good repeated many times, such as 301 herringbone or 304 wave, and use the same gauge and finish on every floor. Contractors can order the full quantity at once so all panels come from the same batch.
Common mistakes
- Mixing designs on balconies that are seen side by side.
- Cutting a pattern awkwardly at the end of a bay. Centre the pattern, or ask us to cut panels to each bay length.
- Skipping the bottom rail: the panel edge alone is not strong enough.
