Steel sheets & profiles By Antoh Decor Enterprises 3 min read
Key points
- A Z-profile is a steel section bent into a Z shape.
- It is used for door and gate frames, overlaps between leaves, louvre gates and weather stops.
- Antoh Decor bends profiles in its workshop and delivers by the bundle.
- Special shapes can be made with the cutting and bending service.
A steel Z-profile (Z-section or Z-bar) is a strip of steel bent into a Z shape: two flanges facing opposite ways, joined by a web. That simple shape solves several problems in gate and door fabrication.
What Z-profiles are used for
- Door and gate frames: the Z-shape forms a rebate (step), so the door closes against a stop instead of passing through the frame.
- Overlaps: where two gate leaves or double doors meet, a Z-profile on one leaf overlaps the other, closing the gap for privacy and security.
- Louvre gates and vents: rows of Z-profiles set at an angle let air through but block the view.
- Weather stops at the bottom of doors, to keep rain from blowing in.
Ordering tips
- Tell us the use: frame, overlap or louvre. This decides the flange and web sizes.
- Give the lengths you need and the quantity. We bend profiles in our workshop and deliver them by the bundle.
- Need a shape that is not standard? Our cutting and bending service can make it from a drawing.
Working with Z-profiles
Cut with a grinder or chop saw, and mitre the corners of frames for a neat joint. Tack, check for square, then weld. Profiles are thin, so stitch-weld to avoid distortion. Finish with paint or powder coating, paying attention to the inside corners where water sits.
Example: a double steel door with an overlap
On a pair of steel doors, the gap where the leaves meet is the weak point: it lets in light, rain and the tip of a crowbar. Weld a Z-profile along the meeting edge of the active leaf so it overlaps the other leaf when closed. The overlap hides the gap, keeps out rain and makes the doors harder to force. Fit a drop bolt on the passive leaf and the lock on the active one.
Louvre gates
A louvre-style gate uses rows of profiles set at an angle, overlapping like the slats of a blind. Air passes through but you cannot see in from the road. It is a good choice where you want privacy but a solid sheet would catch too much wind. Keep the spacing consistent with a simple jig, and weld each profile at both ends.
Common mistakes
- Ordering profiles without saying the use, then finding the flanges are the wrong size.
- Corners butted instead of mitred on visible frames.
- Water traps: profiles fitted so that the channel holds rain. Fit them so water drains away.
